Aerospace Student Wins Inaugural 3MT Competition

From monster El Niños to electronic spaghetti, the thesis topics covered during Georgia Tech’s inaugural Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition were as different as the students who presented them. But it was a compelling argument to leave ancient rocket engines behind that brought home the gold.

On Nov. 18, Jonathan Walker, a Ph.D. student in Aerospace Engineering, walked away from the competition with a $2,000 research travel grant. He will also represent Tech at the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools annual meeting, which will be held in February 2016 in Charlotte, N.C.

Other winners included the following Ph.D. students:

  • Runner up: Marian Hettiaratchi
    Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering Heparin Microparticles: A New Method for Bone Regeneration $1,500 research travel grant
  • Third Place and People’s Choice: Pamela Grothe
    Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
    Coral-thermometers and Monster El Ninos
$1,000 and $500 research travel grants

Videos of all of the presentations can be found here. For more information about the 3MT competition at Georgia Tech, visit www.grad.gatech.edu/3MT.
